Thiolated chitosan เป็น modified chitosan ที่สังเคราะห์โดยการเติมหมู่ thiol ในโครงสร้างของ chitosan มีหลายอนุพันธ์ thiolated chitosan แสดงคุณสมบัติในการยึดเกาะกับเยื่อเมือกสูงและสามารถเกิด in situ gelation กระบวนการเกิด in situ gelation ที่ physiological pH นำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการนำส่งยาโดยอาศัยการเกิด sol-gel transition ที่เกิดขึ้นในร่างกายได้ นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า thiolated chitosan ยังมีคุณสมบัติเป็น permeation enhancer อีกด้วย มีการนำ thiolated chitosan มาประยุกต์ใช้ในระบบนำส่งยา ได้แก่ injectable mucoadhesive hydrogel, wound healing hydrogel และนำมาใช้ในระบบ ocular, oral และ nasal delivery รวมทั้งด้านวิศวกรรมเนื้อเยื่ออีกด้วย
